Teaching Art Class in Co-op
Joy Anderson
One of the most interesting co-op classes I ever did was when I taught an art class at Eagles’ Wings Co-op for 3-6 year olds.
First I prepared a syllabus for what I wanted to teach and sent it to Mrs. Guest. She approved it, and I got all my materials together to teach. I taught the class once every Friday for six weeks, teaching different shapes and patterns and how we are creative because our Creator, God, is creative. We drew people, boats, balls, bunnies, snowmen, shapes…etc.
In that class, I learned that, although preparing for and teaching the class was somewhat demanding (besides all my other school!), in the end, it was very rewarding. The children learned how to draw better; I had learned how to teach a class—and how to have fun at the same time—and also how to prepare a class for my helper when I wouldn’t be there for a class.
One very important detail that I had almost forgotten was how wiggly and squirmy young children could be when sitting for long periods of time. So, in between drawing periods, I would devise little exercises and moving games for them. We did things like jumping jacks, follow-the-leader, etc. Soon they would be settled down (or at least a little bit).
The children had fun, I had fun, and it was a very interesting and worthwhile class.
I am grateful to my helper, Mrs. Connie Vandervort for doing an awesome job with the kids and also to Mrs. Estel Alves for filling in for Mrs. Vandervort when she had to be away.
